The following information was provided by Hilton's son, Larry Prather.
Hilton Prather was a teacher in the Ford School System. He moved his family to Meade in 1953, where he served as Principal of Meade High School. Hilton was one of the class sponsors for the Class of 1956 and served as coach of the tennis team when the sport was introduced to Meade High in 1956. He was active in and held various positions with the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

He and Mrs. Prather bought the Motel on the west edge of town (Moon Mist) in 1959 and in 1960 Hilton retired from teaching and managed the motel until the early 1980's when he retired.

Hilton was a man of many interests. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, coin collecting, and collecting Native American Indian artifacts. He was active in his Church and Kiwanis. He passed away in 1993.

 
 

Obituary: Frederick Hilton Prather

MEADE - Frederick Hilton Prather, 85, died April 23, 1993, at Meade District Hospital.

He was born Oct. 3, 1907, at Dodge City, the son of Fred H. and Elizabeth Motz Prather. A Meade resident since 1953, he was a graduate of Dodge City High School and attended Fort Hays State College, he received his bachelor's degree from Southwestern College, Winfield, and did his graduate work at the University of Nebraska. He was a retired school teacher and superintendent of Meade schools and was the former owner and operator of the Moon Mist Motel.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Kiwanas Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and he served on the Meade City Council, all at Meade.

On May 26, 1936, he married Mary L. Bechtel at Garden City. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Larry, Buhler, and Charles, McPherson; two daughters, Linda Prather, Meade, and Carol Zart, Leavenworth; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Opliger presiding. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade. Private family burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Meade, preceding the services.
